Bright Green Nature joins over 100 organisations calling for the right to a healthy environment
Bright Green Nature has signed an open letter to the First Minister urging the Scottish Government not to exclude the right to a healthy environment from the Human Rights Bill.
The letter, coordinated by the Environmental Rights Centre for Scotland (ERCS), has now been endorsed by more than 100 organisations from across Scotland. It calls for the right to a healthy environment to be included in the Bill, recognising that clean air, safe water, healthy ecosystems and a stable climate are essential to people’s health, wellbeing and future.
You can read the final open letter on the ERCS website: Open letter to the First Minister on the right to a healthy environment.
ERCS has also published a press release about the campaign: Over 100 organisations urge First Minister not to abandon the right to a healthy environment.
Why this matters
A legally recognised right to a healthy environment would help ensure that environmental protection is treated as a fundamental issue of human rights, not simply a policy preference. It could strengthen accountability for decisions affecting nature, climate and public health, and support communities seeking cleaner, safer and healthier places to live.
For Bright Green Nature, this aligns closely with our work to restore and protect biodiversity, connect people with nature, and support healthier, more resilient communities across East Lothian and beyond.
