WYS – Work and Schools

We love working with schools interested in nature restoration! We encourage all Scottish Borders schools to apply to us for funding. You can also contact us for advice on making space for nature in your playgrounds and enhancing human-nature connection.

Many schools across the Borders have worked with us on a Wild Your Space project, with examples ranging from the creation of mini wildflower meadows, to pond development, sensory gardens and bug hotels. To support your school, Bright Green Nature offers project specific activities such as a project planning toolkitplayground bioblitzFIT count surveyspre and post project surveys, and writing letters of request to local businesses and parents/carers for support.

If you would like to learn more about how to Wild your School, or you are interested in arranging a visit to support a particular School nature restoration project, please get in touch.

Wild Your School Case Studies

Nature restoration projects are always a work in progress. For this reason we don’t show before and after photos, but we can share where each project has got to in the process of restoring nature!

If you would like your school project to feature on our website, please get in touch with Fraser.

Ednam Primary School

Following wild storms in winter 2024, Ednam Primary School pupils arrived at school one morning to find their port-a-cabin classroom had no roof and water pouring through the empty space. Undeterred by the devastation, teachers and pupils worked together to move desks and books into the main building. The damaged port-a-cabin was thereafter removed to reveal an area of waste land below.

With the hope and positivity typical of children, the pupils saw a unique opportunity to turn this barren land into an area for nature restoration and connection. By the time Bright Green Nature came to visit, the school had already done a fantastic job of reclaiming the space for nature. Where once gravel and rubble lay bare, there was now green lawn for young people to play on, planter boxes for growing and a long flower bed filled with lavender.

But the young people wanted to go further. They knew that rewilding the area with native species would support local biodiversity, attract pollinators and lead to a more resilient and sustainable ecosystem. This is where Bright Green Nature got involved! Our microgrant helped Ednam PS to purchase a range of native wildflowers and shrubs to provide learning and nature connection opportunities for the school and village community. Their goal is that this project will start a “nature ripple” in Ednam, inspiring others in the community to create and maintain their own natural wild spaces in the future. Well done Ednam Primary School and thank you for involving Bright Green Nature.

St Boswells Nursery

In May 2024, St Boswells Nursery applied to Bright Green Nature for a grant to create a wildflower corner in plain grass area of their nursery playground.

Following their successful application and with the support of Bright Green Nature and volunteers from the community, they turned an area of grass into a bountiful biodiversity haven for pollinators.

The bees love buzzing through it. The children love hiding in it. The grown ups love adding to it. A space for nature and people to thrive and enjoy.

Clovenfords Primary School

In February 2025, Clovenfords Primary School applied to Bright Green Nature for a microgrant to increase the biodiversity and accessibility of their “Pond hill”

Through a series of visits with the P7 Garden leaders and some sweat and tears from the BGN team, we helped the school install a new pond, a path up their hill and some native aquatic plants to oxygenate the pond.
